Why should you join Cairn?

The key word here is YOU.

Cairn was established from a growing feeling within creative circles in Scotland that for a union to be effective it must be truly democratic & member led. Many unions today work through advocacy meaning crucial decisions are often taken by a single member of staff and negotiations made without engaging the majority of ordinary workers. Key actors are instead often union officials, lawyers, lobbyists and PR professionals. There is no doubt that small advances can be won this way but the compromises can hurt deeply. Often it seems like we pay our dues and then 'the union’ takes control, leaving many of our rights, issues and perspectives overlooked. In Cairn, we believe in mobilising and organising from within. Every Cairn member will take ownership of their rights and responsibilities - a union is only as strong as its membership and the might of a workforce mobilised and organised sends a clear message that every voice is vital in challenging inequality. When members choose to add their stone to ‘the Cairn’, they add their unique voice, invaluable expertise and experience; all of which are crucial in pursuing fairness and equality in our creative workplace.

What does this mean?

  • It means that, although employees will be essential to provide administrative, legal and practical assistance, only the Membership of Cairn can hold office, have the final say in policy-making and initiate campaigns.

  • Members will support one another to play an active and empowered role in garnering support for campaigns and fair pay and conditions in the workplace.
